My 5 Wash Day Essentials

Since starting my hair journey I’ve learned how beneficial it is to keep things simple. Once I find what works for me I try and stick to it. That being said, here are my 5 essentials you’ll need for a successful wash day!

Wide Tooth Comb

Using a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair will prevent breakage and shedding. Make sure you comb your hair from the ends and work your way up. Seamless combs or shower combs are best as your hair won’t get caught in the seams that usually cause snagging on the hair and breakage.

Plastic Cap

Plastic caps are an absolute wash day must! Covering your hair with a plastic cap after a pre-poo or deep condition is a great way of adding heat to your treatment. Wearing your plastic cap generates heat and increases the rate at which your conditioner is absorbed. If your fro won’t fit under a plastic cap, a plastic bag will do the job! I always stock up on multipacks as you can never have too many!

Hot Head

If you haven’t read my review of the Thermal Care Hot Head, then make sure you do. This has been a staple in my wash day routine since I purchased it in February. If you’re looking for an affordable way to intensify your deep condition then the Hot Head is for you. It uses heat-producing flaxseed in a cap to give you a “salon quality” deep conditioning experience from the comfort of your own home.

Microfibre Towel

Avoid towel drying your hair and switch your regular towel for a microfibre towel. They’re much softer on your hair compared to regular towels and cut down on blow drying time as they absorb more water and help reduce frizz. If you can’t get your hands on a microfibre towel, then try using a cotton t-shirt to soak up all the excess water from your hair. I use both for different steps during my wash day.

After rinsing out my conditioner, whether I’m air drying or blow drying, I wrap my wet hair in a cotton t-shirt for 20-30 minutes to soak up all the excess water from my hair. Just like the microfibre towel, doing this before applying any product helps reduce frizz and cuts down on the amount of heat usage.

Mixing Bowl & Applicator Brush

These little bowls are perfect for blending your favourite conditioners and oils together for a deep condition. Applicator brushes are great for applying your deep conditioning mix as close to your roots and new growth as possible.
