My Healthy Hair Regime

img_4142

Over the last 5 years of my hair journey, I’ve developed a comprehensive hair regime which has allowed my hair to really reach its potential. I’m a lot less strict with my regime these days and try to react to the needs of my hair, making changes when necessary.

The key to a successful hair journey is a hair regime that promotes a good balance of moisture and protein.

Keep reading to see what I do to my hair daily, weekly and monthly.

Daily

Moisturise & Seal

Using a water based moisturiser, I part my hair into sections and apply the moisturiser from root to tip.

My current go to moisturisers are Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer, ORS Olive Oil Moisturizer & Mielle Organics Moisturizing Avocado Hair Milk.

I follow this up by sealing in the moisture and going over the area with a natural oil, then covering my hair with a satin cap. I’ve used Organic Coconut Oil since the start of my hair journey and I love it. Oils are such an important part of healthy hair care, so be sure to stock up on them! Extra Virgin and unrefined oils are the best and I try to use organic oils where possible.

Styling

I use Aloe Vera Gel & Lotta Body Edge Gel to lay my edges when I’m rocking sleek styles.

Weekly

Shampoo

I part my hair into 4 and wash my hair in sections to avoid tangling. Focusing on my scalp, I apply a moisturising shampoo. I’m currently using Aunt Jackie’s Oh So Clean Moisturising & Softening Shampoo & Mielle Organics Babassu Conditioning Shampoo.

Deep Condition

After Shampooing, I deep condition, making sure I add to oils to my conditioner. I alternate weekly between a moisturising deep conditioner & light protein deep conditioner. My favourite moisturising conditioners are Aunt Jackie’s In Control Moisturising & Softening Conditioner and Elasta QP DPR-11+ and for light protein, ORS Replenishing conditioner. I cover my hair with a plastic cap and my Hot Head and leave the mix on for at least an hour. Incorporating heat at this step really helps to intensify the deep condition.

Airdry

I try to minimise my use of heat to once a month, I tend to air dry on most wash days.

Leave In

I use Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioning Repair Cream & Shealicious Moisture Mist Leave-In Conditioning Spray on 70% air-dried hair. I follow this up by moisturising and sealing my hair when it is almost completely dry.

Monthly

Clarify Shampoo

Once a month, I clarify my hair using ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo to remove any product build up.

Protein Treatment

Once a month, before or after shampooing, I give myself a protein treatment using ORS Hair Mayonnaise with oils added to the mixture.  As with deep conditioning, I apply the conditioner to my hair in sections, rinse, and follow up with a moisturising deep conditioner. I also use Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor with heat.

3 Times a Year

I stretch my relaxers for 16 or so weeks, so I only relax my hair 3 times a year. I use ORS Olive Oil Relaxer in normal strength.

Thanks for this review! I have been waiting for this post. Is there a particular reason why you use the ORS Professional Lye Relaxer over the smaller ORS No-Lye relaxer kits? Thanks.

      Hey Cassandra,
A lot of the hair gurus I watched before starting my hair journey recommended the ORS Professional Lye Relaxer. I think its best to find a relaxer that works for you and to stick with it. I had used the smaller box kits before starting my relaxer but found that it took a lot longer to process my hair and sometimes burned my scalp, so the lye relaxer works better for me.

Thank you for this post! You have lovely hair. It’s hard to find someone who uses products that I can easily access, and has hair as great as yours.

I just have one question, with regards to the leave in and Sealing after you wash your hair. Do you put in the leave in when your hair is 70% dry and then moisturise and seal when it’s completely dry?

Sorry. I just wanted to clarify, because I feel like that one of my biggest problems.

      Hey Rachel,

I hope you found this post helpful! That’s correct, I T-shirt dry for 30 mins to soak up all the excess water, I then remove it and air dry. When my hair is roughly 70% dry, I will apply my leave-in and moisturise and seal when my hair is 90%-100% dry.

      I hope this helps.

Good day you said you air dry your hair ,but how do you get your hair to be so straight when i hair dry my hair it tends to look natural..I realize with my hair when i blow dry my hair and out in hair lotion it get that flat iron look so i add less heat. After you Leave In Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioning Repair Cream & Shealicious Moisture Mist Leave-In Conditioning Spray on 70% air-dried hair do you blow dry your hair or you just leave it ?

      Hi Chevelle,

If I’m wearing my hair straight, I’ll t-shirt dry to get rid of the excess water and apply my leave in and hair protectant before blow drying. However, When I’m air drying, I apply my leave in and tie a satin scarf to smooth my edges. I then moisturise and seal and style my hair for the week, either in 2 braids, 1 twist, a loose bun etc, so it can be styled until my next wash day! If you want to rock a straight look with air drying, try combing through your hair as your hair dries and moisturising when it is almost completely dry.

      I hope this helps!

      Hi,

I still love the ORS Shealicious Shampoo, and is one of many sulphate free shampoos I use on wash day!

I just bought the leave in conditioner and WOW! I’m shocked at the ingredients! There’s no mineral oil or toxic ingredients! PLUS it smells good AND actually conditions my hair! THANK YOU! It’s so hard to find quality products at the stores that I like and this is a first. <3 So thank you!

I'm also going to start using Aphogee again, I stopped using them when I went natural (I just relaxed my hair after 8 years, just yesterday) and I'll be using that again, so thanks for the reminder!! <3
