Top Tips for Maintaining Relaxed Hair on your Fitness Journey

Hey guys, earlier in the year I completed my #HealthyGymJunkie challenge. I committed to working out for a minimum of 30 mins a day for 30 days. One of my most frequently asked questions during that time and since I’ve been sharing my fitness journey is “How do I maintain my relaxed hair whilst working out?”.

Keep reading for my top tips on how to successfully work out whilst maintaining relaxed hair.

Styling

Style your hair in low manipulation, gym-friendly styles. Keeping your hair out of your face with your ends tucked away is best.

I love to workout with my hair in high buns and ponytails but my go-to style is  2 cornrows. I pin the ends up into a halo braid style if I’m going extra hard that day. This is also great if you want to rock a braid-out post-workout.

Low-Intensity Workouts

If you’re someone that straightens their hair regularly, then complete your low-intensity workouts, like weights training, after wash day and save your sweaty high-intensity workouts, like HIIT workouts, until a few days before wash day. This will help you maintain your straight hair without compromising your workout routine.

Cowash

If your workouts are fairly regular and intense, you may benefit from co-washing your hair. You can either apply a light conditioner whilst you workout, covering it with a plastic cap and headwrap and rinse post-workout or simply rinse with conditioner post workout. Always follow up a co-wash with either a protein treatment or moisturising deep conditioner, depending on how your hair feels.

Cleanse

If you are working out daily and mid-week wash days aren’t possible, then make sure you’re cleansing your hair with a moisturising shampoo at least once a week.

I like to use the KeraCare 1st lather shampoo and follow up with the hydrating detangling shampoo to make sure the sweat and build up are lifted.Healthy hair junkie | keracare shampoo

Clarify

As a regular gym goer, keeping up with your clarifying shampoo is important. This should be done every 4-6 weeks to remove the sweat and salt build up on your scalp. Check out my last wash day to see which products I use.

Just Do It!

Lastly, don’t let straight hair hold you back from your fitness goals! Remember, healthy hair starts from the inside, so get in that gym and get your workout in no matter how long, short or intense it is.

What are your top tips for reaching your hair and fitness goals?
